I recently had two 500 gb drives wd5000ys die in external premium My Books and replaced them with this 1tb internal unit Hopefully the reliabilty will be back to WD standards that I have always experienced Drives are always quiet and fast
THE BOX THAT AMAZON USES FOR THESE DRIVES IS FAR INFERIOR TO THE PACKAGING AND CARE I GET WHEN I ORDER A BOOK ON AMz AND WANT IT UNHARMED BY VARIOUS SHIPPING TERRORS DRIVES COME PACKAGED IN CARDBOARD CUTOUT ARRANGEMENT THAT BASICALLY LEAVES THE DRIVE FLOPPING AROUND IN THE BOX WHY DO BOOKS GET BETTER CARE THAN A DELICATE COMPUTER HARD DRIVE WORST AMz PACKAGING EVER THEY ARE USUALLY AWESOME AT THIS STUFF
Last note if you have any of these My Book drives crash it is not too terribly difficult to put a new drive in the enclosure The tricky part is getting the goofy case apart WD is not very good at telling you how to do it or at least I couldn t find anything at the WD site related to it You Tube probably has some guy on video showing you how to pull them apart I managed it Many of the varieties of WD My Book cases come apart differently too I had a spare 400gb and put that in the 500gb My Book Premium case and runs great
